The last post on tile efficiency was kind of basic, so today’s article now introduces the concepts we are going to use in the future articles. Especially, Shan-Ten (how many away), Uke-Ire (the amount of tiles that move you one shanten closer to tenpai) and Good Shape Evolution (when your hand will evolve towards good shape). So, enjoy.
What’s News – 29-10-2010
Today’s market closed with cold beer down 100 pericas, and… oh right, MAHJONG news. Yea.
In case you’re new here, this is one of those filler posts we make so people will think this blog is “active and frequently updated“. w
BakaBT Mahjong Tournament Announced
The Slowpoke Express has just arrived bearing news – the 1st BakaBT Mahjong Tournament is a go.
As the participants have just been sorted into groups, the tournament kicks off with a league format, probably with a cutoff into further rounds. We’re still rather unclear about the particulars. The tournament organizers should have their hands full handling game reports and matching up the 98 participants confirmed thus far, as almost all of them can only play at 5pm on odd-numbered Tuesdays in their respective time zones. BakaBT has always had one of the more active anime-based communities for as long as I can remember, so it’s no surprise that the signup thread had almost 100 posts within a few days before it was slammed shut in a panic. We shall see who among the pantsu pundits shall prevail against their peers.
(See what I did there?)
How to get better at Jansou Mode
I’ve been playing Jansou Mode a little, lately. It is the newest addition to Tenhou. But it is probably the first time for many playing in this mode. Today, the explanation is on how to better understand the way to make profit in Jansou Mode. (Warning, it’s a bit loooong. Twss. w)
Tile Efficiency 101 (Part 1)
This is xKime, aka Kimecchi. Just another online mahjong player/writer from the depths of Tenhou.net, Janryuumon, RonRon, Toupaiou, Saki’s website, and pretty much any other mahjong playing system you can find out there, trying to improve his level and learning on the way. Not godly, not completely idiotic, going up one step at the time. This time, I come to talk to you about 牌理 or “tile efficiency.” From the very basics, going into more delicate problems. A great skill to have at the time you encounter a “What Would You Discard” problem.

Actual Mahjong News Post 6-10-2010
Woa, I intended to make this post ages ago. Unfortunately my computer broke and then I got lazy. But yeah, we do plan to continue this feature at somewhat regular intervals.
And in case you’re wondering, this is exactly the kind of valueless content a previous post was criticizing. The distinction here is that this material is screened to be “valueless but amusing”. I mean, are there a lot of people who want to hear a report of a suicide in China where it’s mentioned the guy had a family member who played Mahjong? Probably not. Would people get a kick out of hearing someone made a body pillow designed after former Ukrainian PM Julia Timoshenko’s appearance in Mudazumo? You bet!
Yeah, we sure are classy. :V
More Manga
Here’s a 4 page oneshot by the Blade of the Immortal mangaka, Hiroaki Samura.
Title is “mahjong de atta waraeru hanashi samura hiroaki hen” or Mirror Play.
Here’s some manga (haou)
A friend said he would translate a chapter of what ever I wanted in exchange for some obscure eroge. I had to wait a year for that translation.
The Problem with Googling Mahjong (content generation)
There’s been a trend by a few websites aggregating news relating to mahjong simply by saying “dear google, mahjong me my website, me love you longtime”. Now, I’m not writing this out of a spiteful feeling towards a specific website, as I’ve seen it in a few places, so I’ll put my disclaimer at the end of the article. But here we go: Why is some suicide in the backwater of Hong Kong relevant to mahjong?
(kid to mom): ‘Goodbye, daddy and mummy. Mum, don’t play mahjong again,’
