What is not obvious with either acronyms NMJL or USPML, is that they are two completely different styles of game which involve similar tile sets. I don't think NMJL minds at all because USPML is playing Japanese Riichi style, not the American card. Think of it like the NFL/CFL - same football, slightly different rules.

That actually sounds like quite a painful day.

I guess I would have had to be there. Which I plan to one day, if I ever get the chance to attend an overseas Mahjong event.

Wow. An entry which actually praises something. :)
I showed one of the USPML folks around Tokyo a few months ago. They're very enthusiastic guys and the one I showed around was surprisingly adept at playing. Yes, their name is unfortunate but hopefully that won't cause too much problems. I don't think NMJL really cares about their existence--although I wouldn't mind if they actually were offended--but even if they did it wouldn't matter because TACOS is right.

I think you should feel indifferent because it does not concern you. In a few years, it may grow to, say, 100-odd players, and in a few more, perhaps 300 or so.

And you will be there on the sidelines, rekindling your contempt dulled with the passage of time, remembering when it was just a bunch of guys with a vaguely offending club name.

Easily 300k++

It's basically the same as calling the entire NMJL+AMJA player base amateur motherf***ers.
If anything, I support their name just for that.

I wonder how many American players they've offended with their club's name.
