When playing non-tile-related games it's polite or even just normal for a guy to say 'gg' after the end of a game. Good game. Perhaps it was a long drawn-out struggle, a close match going down to the wire, or perhaps the newcomer was totally outclassed and outmatched. Either way, the better player won, and the worse guy learned something, or at least is taking his defeat like a man. I'll be the first to admit though, that after losing a game of mahjong, 'gg' won't be the first thing that comes to mind, (more...)
I was looking at some old pictures I had saved and found this, scores are:

I decided to play some games with a limit placed on me, I wasn't allowed to riichi.
Asomu(-28) ahopon(-2) NoName(-16) Gimite(+46)
I'll play some more games later and add even more limits, just for fun.
Just a basic hand chart. Seriously. There is nothing else to see.
Actually it's rather misleading calling mahjong yaku 'hands', since most of them are just certain restrictions or conditions checked for in your complete hand. The only time entire complete hands have to be assembled tile for tile is if you are going for a yakuman...
No. Wait.
If you are the kind of person who calls them 'hands' you definitely need to read this.
Apparently according to Osamu he's been getting quite a few hits from people using terms like "plus minus zero", so I am making a short post on this. If you are interested in emulating Saki's feat of breaking even at the end of a match on tenhou, here are the score ranges you should aim for,
In a tonpuusen,
(+5) 2nd place - 24500 - 25400
(-5) 3rd place - 34500 - 35400
In a han chan,
(+10) 2nd place - 19500 - 20400
(-10) 3rd place - 39500 - 40400
These are the target score ranges for ±0 on tenhou. I'm quite content with the site and its interface and do not feel the need to poke around the new flavor-of-the-week mahjong clients, so your mileage with other rulesets may vary.
As you can see, due to the need to maintain a substantial positive score in third place, especially if you are playing a han chan, it is a lot easier to get ±0 finishing in second place, barring a huge hand resulting in a player busting out with a negative score.
TRA pointed out this error in the first episode of Saki.
Delving into the vile abyss that is the internet, one of our intrepid explorers found this arcane document. She handed it over to me and promptly expired. I thought it appropriate to show the world a glimpse of what lurks beneath. Her sacrifice will not be in vain.
so, today was the air date of Saki, and it was no suprise that a lot of people gathered to http://tenhou.net/0/?L7447. I hope that this trend continues, it's always nice to get a unranked game. So...
